It is a struggle to not have a driver's license. I have to rely on other people, public transportation, and Uber. I can get around without a driver's license but it is a lot harder to do so than with one. Public transportation in Northern Virginia is not the most reliable, Uber and Lyft are very expensive, and I feel like I am bothering other people when I ask them for rides. I am scared of asking other people for rides because I do not want to be annoying and I have a hard time asking for help. Oftentimes, I will miss out on events because I am afraid of asking people for rides.
I am unable to get a license because of my migraines, ADHD, and anxiety. When I have a migraine, I cannot focus on anything and I become very light sensitive. My migraines can come at any time, for example, I could get a migraine attack on the highway and would just be stuck there because I would not be able to focus enough to get myself somewhere safe. My ADHD causes me to be in my own little world and thus I would not be focusing on the road. The last time I went behind the wheel of a car, I had an anxiety attack. I remember I was with my driving instructor and I had to move across three lanes and while doing so I almost hit another car. Afterwards my instructor had me move to a neighborhood street and park. He gave me a bottle of water and we switched seats. I have never gotten behind the wheel of a car since.
Not having a driver's license has heavily impacted my job opportunities. I am currently looking for a job right now and most jobs in the field that I want to go into require a car and a license. I understand why these jobs require a license but that does not make it any less frustrating. I also cannot apply to jobs where public transportation is not accessible. There could be a job that I would love to have but would not be able to because, I would have no way of getting there.
